FIX Antenna 2.34 Unveils Nanosecond Timestamping for HFT
Nanosecond timestamping is crucial in high-frequency trading (HFT) and other time-sensitive trading strategies.
The upcoming release of Fix Antenna 2.34 (FA) introduces new capabilities, including nanosecond-precision timestamps for TCP packets as they traverse the system. This feature tracks packets from the moment the send is initiated by the application to the point when the counterparty confirms receipt.
Leveraging the Linux kernel 6.2 SOF_TIMESTAMPING_OPT_ID_TCP option, (OpenOnload 8.2 supports the same API).
Various types of applications stand to benefit from these new features, including:
- Latency-sensitive order execution (HFT): Precise timestamping powers more intelligent execution logic
- Post-trade latency analysis: Identify delays in order routing and processing to optimize trading performance.
- Smart order routing: Real-time order latency monitoring enables dynamic routing changes based on wire-to-execution latency.
- Wire-to-market latency optimization: Estimate execution priority or slippage under market load to gain a competitive edge.
- Network diagnostics: Enhanced visibility into network performance facilitates troubleshooting and optimization.
